Ever wondered why seemingly intelligent and well meaning people start behaving in a manner, that seems counter productive to the work at hand, when placed in a group?
Or, why groups seem to get stuck on what doesn’t seem like the actual task that they should be doing; but, everyone is still busy with doing something? And why some people in groups end up taking up specific roles?
Wilfred Bion’s Experiences in Groups (1961) is a landmark work, that stood the test of time, in the space of unconscious functioning of human beings in groups. Bion’s hypothesis was that, when any group of people meet to do a task, there are in actuality two groups, or two configurations of mental activity, present at the same time.
All the defence mechanisms that operate at individual level, also seem to operate at group level. Groups can be in denial or can regress in a way that makes them dysfunctional. When we don’t understand that these are unconscious processes brought about due to our anxieties, desires, motives, we can stay stuck in them and not be able to do the task of the group.
